It’s finally happening: you get to plan the wedding of your dreams! Well, hopefully you get as close to your dream as possible, because the element we tend to forget about as kids is money. We think about having our wedding in a castle, with all 300 of our friends, with dishes from all over the world. And then, once it’s actually time to plan the wedding, we finally see the price tag—and the dreams have to shift a little.
So how do you pivot? How do you still have the wedding of your dreams without the price tag? We’re here to help! Below you’ll find a few of our favorite ways to save money on your wedding reception. From DIYing the centerpieces to being careful with add-ons, we’ve got the tricks you need!
Cut Down on Your Guest List
Rule number one: a smaller guest list means more money in your pocket. If you’re debating inviting your second cousin whom you haven’t seen in over five years, don’t. Cutting down on who’s invited is one of the best ways to save money without necessarily needing to adjust your dreams.
Not sure who to cull? Make a decision with your partner about where the family cut-off is. If you only want immediate family, then stick to that. If you haven’t seen someone in over a year or at least had a solid phone call with them, then say no.
Choose a Venue That Fits Your Personality
One of the biggest mistakes that excited couples make is choosing venues that look the prettiest at first sight. But if you’re planning on having more of a farmhouse feel but you go for a reception hall in the city, then you’ll end up having to do too much work. When you choose a venue that fits your personality as well as your wedding’s personality, you’ll save money in the long run because you’ll get to use the venue’s natural décor and feel. Deciding on wedding décor can be stressful, which is why it’s essential that you don’t have to battle the venue to meet your needs. Try to enhance the venue’s current style, and that will save you quite a bit of decorating money.
Pay Attention to Flowers
Flowers actually represent a big price point when it comes to the reception and overall wedding costs. If you were dreaming of having authentic Hawaiian flowers in your hair or in your bouquet, then you might have to reevaluate, depending on your budget. Take a look at some of our important flower tips:
DIY Your Bouquets
Head to a local flower shop or even a local grocery store and pick up some fresh flowers! You probably won’t have time for it the night before or day of, so ask a loved one if they’d be able to put together the bouquets themselves.
Use More Greenery
Of course we all love flowers, but greenery is gorgeous, and it saves! Using different foliage instead of flowers for all (or even some) of your bouquets and décor can save you a bundle. Plus, it adds wonderful texture to the bouquet, tables, and general design. If you opt for a florist rather than DIY, don’t hesitate to ask them for their favorite less pricey swaps.
DIY or not, make sure you stick with local, in-season blooms. Sunflowers for a winter wedding don’t mix, and they’ll end up being insanely priced. Work with the season!
Think About the Table
Now, the meals you choose often rely on your venue or vendor, but you do have the ability to make tweaks to the rest of the table if you need to. Don’t hesitate to say no to the afterdinner coffee and tea, especially if it adds extra big bucks. Here are few other things to decide on for the table:
As with DIY bouquets, if you can save on centerpieces, those costs savings will add up as well! Especially if your guest count ends up being high, the more you can save on individual table offerings, the better. For example, if you love the idea of water- and pebble-filled vases with tea lights and floating blooms, you can easily make these on your own. Buy the supplies in bulk from a wholesaler, and then put together the centerpieces with the help of some friends. You’ll love that you get to say you did it yourself!
Opt for Elegant Plastic
If you’re doing a backyard-style wedding or something similar, don’t pay the crazy price for china plates. Instead, go for elegant plastic dinnerware—there are so many options, so you can always get find dinnerware to fit your exact wedding style!

Ask for Help
At the end of the wedding planning day(s), don’t forget that your biggest resources are the people around you. Your friend who has a cousin who’s a DJ? See if they can DJ your wedding! Your cousin who’s got calligraphy on lock? Ask if she’d be willing to create the seat assignment cards. When you ask your loved ones, friends, or even coworkers for help, you’ll end up saving quite a bit of money. In fact, this is one of the best ways to save money on your wedding reception.
That said, try not to be too idealistic. You won’t be able to DIY everything. Don’t ask your friends to do every task you can’t DIY. Even just DIYing and cutting back in a few areas will save you money in the long run.
At the end of the day, your dream wedding is still your dream wedding, whether or not you spend thousands. What matters is the person next to you at the altar; everything else is a wonderful addition. Partner up your wedding day with Posh Party, and see your dreams turn to reality!
